Gov. Abbott announced Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients can use their food benefits to purchase hot foods and ready-to-eat meals due to impacts from the severe winter storm. This applies to retailers across the state that accept SNAP and extends through the end of March. Additionally, SNAP recipients can apply for replacement benefits for food lost or destroyed due to the severe weather. Call 211 to apply

Applying for Assistance & Working with Insurance

Complete the Texas Division of Emergency Management Self Reporting Damage Survey to help state officials understand and assess the extent of damages sustained across Texas

Call your insurance agent or company as soon as possible to report property damage, and file a claim with them first, then apply to Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) FEMA can’t duplicate benefits if you received insurance from your provider first

Make a list of damaged property, and gather any original receipts. Take pictures or video of the damage. Don’t throw anything away until your insurance company tells you to

If you have damage to your home or business that is not covered by insurance, you may qualify for low interest loans through the Small Business Administration. Click here for more information and to apply online

Keep a record of everyone you talk to at your insurance company. Be ready to answer questions about the damage

Ask about an advance payment if you need help quickly

Inquire about living expenses. Some policies will cover some of the costs if you are unable to live in your home because of covered damage

Make sure you keep receipts for any costs you pay out-of-pocket for living expenses or repairs

Take steps to protect your home from further damage. Turn off the water and cover broken windows and holes in your roof if possible. Save all receipts. Your policy may cover these costs

Try to be there when the insurance company comes to inspect the damage. If you can’t stay in your home, leave a note with information on where you can be reached
Avoiding Scams

Get more than one bid to help decide which offers are too high or too good to be true

Check references and phone numbers and call the Better Business Bureau to see if a contractor has complaints

Don’t pay up front and don’t make your final payment until the job is finished

Avoid contractors who offer to waive deductibles or promise a rebate for it, which is illegal under state law

Never sign a contract with blank spaces
