Deceptive “Criminal Investigation” and the Way Forward for the GOP

The Republican Party in Collin County is in turmoil, so much that there was an actual physical altercation at the last Executive Committee meeting. I chose to run for Collin County GOP Chair to fix this broken party, but this election itself has fostered even more turmoil.

My opponent’s backers have now gone so far as to wage “lawfare” against me, just like Joe Biden has against Donald Trump, in an attempt to damage me by engineering a deceptive “criminal investigation.”

Here’s how it works:

  1. A baseless complaint was submitted about me to the Texas Secretary of State alleging violations of both “coercion” and “bribery,” neither of which is true, and neither of which the Secretary of State (SoS) is legally authorized to address; the Secretary of State’s forms page even states clearly that the SoS doesn’t handle campaign-related complaints
  2. The Secretary of State’s office then referred the complaint to the Attorney General, as is just as clearly specified in the official Secretary of State Election Complaint Form
  3. Now, while it’s with the Office of the Attorney General, and next with the Collin County District Attorney (where such complaints belong to begin with), my opponent’s backers are claiming I’m “under criminal investigation.” It wouldn’t surprise me if they’re preparing to pass out libelous flyers to that effect at the polls when early voting starts next Monday; maybe even with a picture of my face behind bars

Well, Sergeant Quinn with the Attorney General’s office already questioned me and told me very directly, “There’s nothing here. There’s no criminal violation. I’m going to recommend this be closed.” The report will need to be completed with the Attorney General’s office, then ultimately referred to the Collin County District Attorney’s office, which is where things like this are supposed to go from the start. Whoever engineered this appears to have known that, and orchestrated it so that the complaint would be passed among multiple agencies so that the “investigation” wouldn’t likely be formally closed out until after the election is over.

Y’all, there’s a reason this is called “Silly Season” but this is a little overboard, and is beneath Republicans. Anyone at all can file a complaint, and unfortunately, stuff like this is apparently so common that the Texas Ethics Commission issued a resolution unanimously condemning such misleading language in campaigns.

As GOP Chair, the Collin County Republican Party won’t operate that way. There’s no room in the GOP for this kind of behavior. My first priority has always been to bring the party together to advance and grow the Republican Party. This kind of tactic does nothing at all to bring us together, and it’s disheartening.

We, as Republicans, are better than that. We’ll win and grow the party on our unflinching proclamation of the truth, the strength of our conservative ideas and principles, and our consistent promotion of Liberty. We’ll welcome anyone and everyone to share those values and join us, because Liberty is for everybody.

Ready to take back our party? I invite you to join us, share this, and I ask for your vote in the May 28th Runoff Election. Early voting is May 20-24.

Please vote responsibly and Let Freedom Ring.
